EVR: Your Soundcloud profile doesn’t date back past 8 months – is that when you started producing?
RAJA: I’ve been producing since I was 6 years old. My older brother got me into production when he started rapping. He wanted me to make beats for him and showed me Aphex Twin when i was really litte. By 2nd grade I was using fruity loops and really into techno.
What was everyone else into?
You’re pretty prolific on there, how do you feel about Soundcloud as a music service?
I still don’t fucking understand it – I finally just understood Twitter & Facebook fan pages but Soundcloud was pure luck. I don’t even know who to follow or that there were followers involved…
And yet you have around 1500…
Yeah I’ve always been envious of the people who get millions of comments then suddenly I’m getting all these comments and I’m like woah. I like soundcloud but I still impulsively upload bullshit then take it down. Some people are more strategic with it, I’m still learning how it works.
Do you consider yourself a producer or a DJ?
A producer, because I haven’t really been that public as of yet and I’m experimenting with songs that don’t necessarily make people move or dance.
Top five influences?
Actress, Johnny Greenwood, Madlib, Lukid, Flying Lotus, Brian Eno and Brian Wilson.
Your sound seems to resonate more with what’s happening in LA than NYC right now, why is that?
I think it’s because I’ve been so reclusive in my town in upstate New York. When I went to LA I realised it’s really unlike NYC and I was very much in my own head, I kinda felt like things are so spread out and I guess I relate to the SOUND of that – I’m not from the city. Where I’m from things are pretty bare.
Being a Producer/DJ usually gets you laid pretty easily. Where’s the easiest place to get laid in NYC?
I mean in my town I would say in my basement where I throw parties. That’s where the girlies come.
Who’s killing it right now?
This dude Lotide, Mattron. Flying Lotus has the torch, but now it’s getting to the point where it’s like: Who’s he going to pass it to? Who’s Next?
If you could bring one dinosaur back from the dead which one would it be?
I was actually thinking about this recently. I’d bring back the longneck, they’re so chill.
Where the fuck would you keep it?
In my backyard, there’s a lot of trees there.
Plans for the rest of 2012?
I’m trying to launch a new website: I’m starting my own imprint called Guns Of Kingston; It’s a New York art imprint. I wrapped up my EP yesterday just waiting to see who will handle it. I don’t plan on self releasing it.
For now, July 6 – Free Candy in Brooklyn. But I’m planning to go back to Europe.
